Types of Searches
AREA SEARCHES
Also called Wilderness Searches, these usually take place outside metropolitan areas and can range from open fields all the way to the most remote wilderness.
Our dogs work off leash, allowing them to cover large areas rapidly and will alert a find with sustained barking.
They are trained to alert on both live and deceased victims.
CASDDA answers calls for all types of Area Searches, from parks, prairies, wooded areas to mountainous terrains. Specialized equipment such as harnesses and ropes may be required. Our dogs and Handlers have rappelling capability.

CADAVER / HRD SEARCHES
All deployable CASDDA dogs are dual purpose, trained for both live and deceased victims.
Our dogs are trained to recognize the scent of any human remains and do not require an article carrying the victim's scent.
They are able to locate deceased individuals, whether they have been missing for a day or for many years,
Furthermore, CASDDA Members have received training in human bones identification, to help them differentiate any finds from animal bones.

Rubble Searches are often referred to as Urban Searches.
In this type of work, dogs search collapsed structures in the hopes of finding survivors, and to locate deceased victims for later recovery.
CASDDA is the only non-governmental Canadian K-9 Team experienced in this type of search, and has deployed to numerous earthquakes, hurricanes and tsunamis.
In a Rubble Search, in order to avoid crushing survivors trapped under the collapsed rubble, the dog works independently and the Handler remains off the Rubble until the dog alerts a find.
Rubble work is the most demanding and dangerous of all the Search and Rescue activities.

A drowning victim
will not rise if the
water is cold.
Water Search is a fairly new discipline that continues to improve. It is limited to the recovery of drowning victims and very few K-9 Teams are trained for it.
Contrary to popular belief, dogs do not have the ability to smell through water. Rather, they indicate on the scent carried by the current once it rises to the surface. Accordingly, the drowning victim is never located at the point of indication and a formula, as well as
technological aids are used to pinpoint the exact location.
CASDDA has a number of dogs trained for Water Search who will indicate on recent drownings as well as on victims who have been deep underwater for several years.
To confirm the indication of our dogs, our highly trained
technicians employ the use of the latest Side Imaging Sonar, an underwater camera and a Remote Operated Vehicle. Our ROV, the Deep Trekker DTG2, also has lifting capability to help where the water is too deep for divers to recover the victim.
CASDDA owns 2 Zodiac boats, a 12' and a 16' and a 21' Extreme Shallow jet boat.
Our equipment includes 3 Side Imaging Sonars, a water camera and a ROV with a depth capability of 150 meters.
CASDDA works with a team of highly trained and experienced divers.
